I Remember When......Mrs Herbert's Memories

Mrs Herbert a local from the Midland area was kind enough to drop in some information about her memories about Midland. Once a student at Midland Junction High School, Mrs Herbert left school at age 15 to look for employment. She outlined how she remembered nearly all of the local amenities in the area and spoke fondly of certain buildings’ architecture. One of the buildings she wrote about was the Commonwealth Bank, which had great style and she highlighted how different it looked to today’s banks. Another building she discussed was Carnegie Library, which she described as very big with great architectural design and said that it should never have been demolished. Through reading Mrs Herbert’s memories and looking at photos she provided to us, I could see she was right, the building structures had such great style. It is a shame that some of those are no longer a part of the Midland landscape.

Her writing created a vision for me of what Midland was like at the time and one of the interesting facts she provided was that the current railway station used to be Trades Hall, where great dances were on a Saturday night. It is strange to think where thousands of people commute from in Midland used to be a place where people would go for a night of entertainment.

Mrs Herbert gave us many memories of Midland from her perspective and we are so grateful for that. We will share more about what she wrote next time.
