More of The Crescent......

Matthew our Marketing Officer provides some more insight about The Crescent:

This week we take a look at the area on the southern side of The Crescent bounded by a small piece of Helena Street, Great Eastern Highway and alongside the old Tuohy Gardens and Midland Railway Company Line. The original owners of the land were the Farrall brothers, Ferdinand and Thomas, who came to Midland Junction from Victoria, developing a timber merchant business and were the area’s first undertakers. The Farrall brothers eventually constructed a small two storey building facing Helena Street that was to eventually house the Commercial Bank of Australia.

This building survived until the 1970s and was replaced with the building that now houses Salvation Army Employment Plus. Ferdinand Farrall went on to become the Mayor of Midland Junction and played a significant role in the early subdivisions of Midvale and Swan View. William Snell & Son Funeral Directors were established in 1926 when William Snell purchased the business off the Farrall brothers.

The business started with a horse drawn hearse and stables on Sayer Street while the funeral home on was being established on The Crescent.

The Snell family continued to operate the business until 1971 when it was eventually taken over by Purslowe Funerals.
