Remember When....

Do you remember when at school there use to be such an exciting build up to the Olympics? Every classroom had gold medals on walls and I remember at home we used to watch the coverage every possible moment we could. There wasn’t the sports coverage like there is today and we were so excited when Australia actually won a medal as it was rare. Sadly in my mind three Olympics stand out because of the politics around them. The 1972 Munich games stands out because of the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches at that games, it was sad to watch as terrorists stood on the balcony of the apartment of the athletes. The 1980 and 1984 Olympics were full of politics with countries protesting about Russia invading Afghanistan and then Russian and 14 other eastern bloc countries not attending the Los Angeles games. Sydney was exciting because it was our turn. Politics has unfortunately dominated sport in those eras and in many ways we are still seeing it today especially around the topics of drugs in sport. Having said that there are so many wonderful stories and inspiring moments we can witness watching the Olympics, the dedication of the athletes chosen is a credit to each that get to compete on the big stage.

Imagine the commitment and belief it takes to become an Olympian and then to be one that is recognised as the best or one of the best in a discipline would be an amazing feeling. Watching the Olympics there are many moments that can bring a tear to your eye or a tingle down the spine, I think that is why we love them. But to be a champion you don’t have to be an Olympian or a sports person, there are many focussed and dedicated people in our society who go unnoticed and simply do things because they care. I tell my kids and myself regularly that sometimes some of the most inspirational people you will met can be someone you work with or in your family. We are all surrounded by heroes, we only need to look outside ourselves for just a moment.

While we are reflecting and on politics our other highlight this week is the census. Remember when someone came around to collect your information and we were all happy to do the forms without a question (though yes we still thought it was a pain). Well this week we all tried to go online and then someone has tried to hack it, not a great start to a new way of doing things. Can you imagine what it would be like if we tried to vote online? Sometimes a bit of paper work is just a bit easier.
