I Remember When with Milton Rendell

Do you remember when your folks told you how different things are to when they were a kid?

I had one of those moments recently when I attended my youngest daughter’s year twelve ball for La Salle College at the Crown.

I went to Governor Stirling High School and in my day, the school ball was a basic dance in the gym.

We dressed up a bit more than normal but certainly not to the level I witnessed the other night and there were no stretch limos, I think I caught the train from Guildford to West Midland with my best pants and walked to school.

Parents were also invited as the school sees the ball as the final step for the kids to be on their way to becoming adults.

It would have been a hell of a shock in my time if our folks came as well.

Another thing that’s changed is the amount of events, they seem to increase every year.

This week we attended the final school graduation/presentation on Sunday night, the ball on Tuesday night and this Friday is the Christmas carols with our daughter performing her final concert in the school band.

I’m not complaining, but wow how things have changed.

The ball night was lovely and well organised with the parents on their own separate tables to the graduates.

Naturally the parents swapped a few stories, all proud of their children looking amazing and so grown up.

At our table we introduced ourselves to the other parents and started chatting and being a father of four girls I said this was my last one and that it’s been a long journey.

One couple also said they had four children but that it was their first child graduating so we had a chuckle.

To the other side of me was another couple and I noticed the mum Pam was having an extra laugh which caught my attention.

She looked at me with a big smile and said, “Milton, this is our seventh ball, all our kids went to La Salle and this is our last one.”

Two of their older children had also come along to celebrate the night with her and dad David for their youngest sister.

Moments like this remind you so much the importance of family and what family means.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and thank you for your support throughout the year.

I hope 2018 is a special year for you and your family.

If I see you at the carols, I will be the loud one up the back who can’t sing but thinks he can and is embarrassing the kids.
