I Remember When with Milton Rendell

DO you remember when the Freemasons Hotel was open and had verandahs and balconies on the front section?

We have a photo in the reception of the hotel back in its hey-day in 1939.

It was a grand building in its time, with a sign on the tower which said “Kalgoorlie Bitter.”

It is fantastic to see it re-open just before Christmas and I popped in for a lunch between Christmas and New Years which was a good feed. Tony and his team have done a great job with getting the building back up and running.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year.

I caught up with my old mate Peter Di Marco and we enjoyed re-living old times while fishing just up from Guildford landing on the bend. There were plenty on boats on the water and it was a beautiful day.

We did catch a few fish and but they were small so we put them back – three yellow tail and one bream and even the small bream still gave a good fight.

We had plenty of bites on the line as well but I’m guessing the fish were so small they didn’t take the full bait.

There is nothing better than on a hot day putting your feet in the water and a line out, thinking about nothing.

I try and re-live my childhood with an old mate at least once a year.

When my daughters were kids, we use to go into the city to enjoy the Chrissy lights and drive around the suburbs to see the lights put up by those who get right into the decorating.

The old Boans department store in the city used to have great displays when I was a youngster in the 60s.

This year my youngest daughter Aimee and I thought we would have a quick drive around locally to see what lights were out and I think the best street we saw for lights was Riverbank Drive in South Guildford.

There were a couple of houses that put in huge efforts, a big thank you to those people from everyone as it is truly nice to see the Christmas spirit is still around.

I am looking forward to sharing some more stories from our area this year.
