I Remember When With Milton Rendell

Do you remember when you couldn’t wait until lunch time or morning play time at school. That was a time you had a run around with class mates. At Guildford Primary was pretty common this time of year, the boys would head straight to the oval which was part of the school where today is the pre-school is and have a kick of the footy.

A couple of our teachers, Mr Hollier and Mr Anderson would come over and have a kick to and show us their craft. Being boys we wanted to try and jump all over them, trying to out mark them. It would have been funny to watch all these kids trying to beat the teachers with the kids half the size.

Couple of the taller guys stood a bit of a chance I think Ian Barron was the one who took them on the best he was pretty strong and a good junior footy player. I was pretty skinny and could bounce off them but that was half the fun we really didn’t stand much of a chance. Other kids would watch and laugh I am not sure we see as much of that these days. It was mainly the grade six and seven who were brave enough to take the teachers on.

The school yard was a hype of activity during the breaks, kids chasing each other around or using skipping ropes. Girls would be involved with a game called elastics with what was a piece of elastic white band they would have stretch between two girls and they would jump in and out of and do some crazy stuff that boys simply didn’t understand it was girl’s stuff.

There were different groups which is pretty normal because of age and interests all spread all around the school each break. No texting in those days no social media life was pretty simple.
