I Remember When with Milton Rendell

I remember when Slater Gartrell Sports opened on Great Eastern Highway in 1978 when Keith and Kevin decided to open their own sports store. Both prominent sportsman in the Midland area for many years and heavily involved in sporting clubs in the area in a variety of positions, both well respected and now nearly forty years later their brand is still alive today. Both were outstanding footballers, cricketers and as well as baseballers and can tell you a story or two.

As many of us know the shop had been relocated a number of years onto Helena Street and is now entering a new phase. I caught up with Rob, Kevin’s eldest son, about their latest changes and in the coming weeks their super store will be opening officially. I had a quick look through and wow the boys have done some great work. It is very impressive and well worth a look but funny as I am chatting with Rob I can still see Kevin in the background organising things so it is still a family affair. Somethings never change. Rob, John, Kevin and Mike Wilkie work many of the same principals they did when Keith and Kevin first opened the store back in the seventies with a focus on service as well as being very committed on helping their local community.

The team at Real Estate Plus celebrated our eighteenth anniversary as well and it has been a long journey since myself and Mike Palmer started back in Midland Gate Shopping Centre in November 1999 with just ourselves and two staff. It will be sixteen years since we merged Sarich Real Estate into our group. Since then, we have added four offices plus our own finance arm Plus Loans and settlement agency Plus Your Settlements collectively now employing over forty people in the Midland Hills area.

In an economy and time when many are describing things as tough that we still have businesses surviving and employing local talent. There are many old great business still in the area and hopefully we can share more of those stories in coming editorials.

We are also aiming to work in with a few others to present an “I Remember When Day” of people’s stories display in 2018. We will keep you posted. Thank you once again for your support and please feel free to share your stories with us any time.
