I Remember When with Milton Rendell

“I Remember When” is a question I asked Michelle Glover who has worked with us at Real Estate Plus for a number of years.

Michelle has been working in our premises at 11 The Crescent for nearly 34 years having started her career with George and Mary Sarich in their real estate office Sarich Real Estate on December 8, 1983.

They had not been in the premises long as it was previously the premises for the Swan Building Society office.

Jackson’s Drawing Supplies were also in the building and today they are still in the area but located next door.
Michelle has certainly seen this part of Midland evolve over that time, so I asked her a few questions on what she had seen change.

The first answer was there was the car park across the road at Tuohy Gardens, the library and the pay public toilets.

At other end of the street at the town clock end were the two banks, the Commercial Bank of Australia and the Bank of New South Wales and between there and the strip was a mixture of shops including a jewellery store, record store and Armando’s who are still there.

Around the corner was the Stafford Court shopping centre with the main grocery store being Knox’s which later became Supa Valu. Albert the hairdresser was there for many years in the centre and a variety of other shops as well as offices.

At one stage the centre was a food court as well, Michelle explained.  Across the road from the centre was once a skating rink then a Bi-Lo store as well a liquor store before becoming a car park.

For lunches in the area, Jimmy Deans was a popular haunt especially on Fridays and on weekends the cinema next door and games place were popular for families.

Michelle said the area was a very busy business centre and buzzing with activity with the stores and banks being close by.

I thought I would ask Michelle her thoughts on Midland Oval redevelopment and her reply was interesting as she believes Midland feels separated with the oval now as it serves no real purpose.

She believes something has to happen but acknowledged that the change needs to meet the majority of the needs of the area not the few.

To work anywhere for over 30 years is amazing in this day and age and we are very fortunate to have Michelle as part of our team for the past sixteen years.

Thanks Michelle for your memories.
