I Remember When with Milton Rendell

Do you remember how conversations start when you catch up with people you know from the past at reunions and funerals? A good friend of mine Dad passed away recently and at the funeral they went through his life and there were plenty of laughs and tears.

His dad, Dan Teraci was a real character but what struck me was the talk of his childhood having Italian migrant parents. Although my friend was born here , his parents had only been in Australia a year when he was born so they only spoke Italian at home.

When he started school he didn’t speak English and they reflected on the prejudices of the time which he found challenging. This made me reflect as well on the divide at times which I witnessed when I was at school.

I remember two young Dutch boys who started at our school and the treatment they received from the bullies of the school was awful. In grade five we had a German boy start in our class my then teacher Miss Fricker asked me if he could sit next to me and if I could help him to settle in.

His name was Frank quite a character and we got on well so to me he was just another ten year old who actually become one of the best athletes I have ever seen winning all the high jumps. I am not sure how society sits at times prejudice seems to have many variations sadly and encouraged. Many don’t like change and prefer to bully which only subtracts from the potential of meeting and being involved with many quality and great people.
