I Remember When with Milton Rendell

Do you remember your first day at high school? I certainly do, I was a Govo lad in the seventies and what a transition that was. I grew up in Guildford and went to Guildford Primary School so I went from a school of around three hundred kids to a school of around two thousand. I knew it was going to be big but I think as a twelve year old it was a lot to absorb first day.

There was recess not play time as we called it in primary, so many classrooms and you had classes in different rooms for each subject. My first form 1-1 teacher was Miss Griffiths who also took us for social studies, we were a loud lot. Govo was a three storey building so when you walked in it was very overwhelming as you can imagine.

This year I understand is the 60th Birthday celebration for the school and today it is far more modern than the school we knew. Many in our time described the school looking more like a prison than a school but it was a great school in many ways.

I still see plenty of people I went to Govo with through real estate and it is great to catch up and share a few stories. I was lucky enough to be part of the school’s football premiership team in 1976, we had a great team and only won by a point. We had some great school teams for various sports. There used to be some fantastic grass tennis courts but sadly they have gone.

Glad to see the school still going and all the best to staff and students with their 60th Anniversary celebrations.
