I Remember When with Milton Rendell

I remember when each year my family in early December would drive into the city at night to see the Christmas lights. The big department store Boans was always our favourite as they had a terrific display and it was an annual event for many families. I know of many families who would also go to the Santa parade through the city as I did with my children, it is a long day but the kids loved it.

I remember at Guildford Primary School we would have our concerts for our mum’s and dad‘s and I imagine it was a pretty stressful time for the teachers trying to coordinate all those kids. I think Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer must’ve been sung by about every child in every school every year.

This time of year for the kids it signifies the end of another year and for the primary school kids possibly the movement into high school. So for those who it will be the last time they may ever attend that school and see some of those kids ever again, it’s a big time of the year for everyone. I think I was like most guys when the teachers were trying to draft you into the choir I can remember clearly making sure when we had to do individual auditions that mine was a shocker as sports were my focus, singing wasn’t a high priority.

Our music teacher must have thought we were the most untalented boys in our school. The poor guys who took it seriously and ended up in the choir used to cop a bit of flak but hey that’s what boys do.

On a serious note, it can be a time of mixed emotions, sad as well as joyous. It is a time for reflection and forgiveness as well as a time to reach out to help others. Families reconnect and catch up with loved ones and share memories over the Christmas break.

Thank you to everyone who have supported the community and helped others during the year. I look forward to sharing some more tales in 2020.
