I Remember When with Milton Rendell

Do you remember your parents and grandparents talking about the depression caused during war times? I think my parents learnt a lot about survival and many ways how to be grateful for what they had. Mum used to say all the time “if you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all”.

Today everyone is told we should have free speech so imagine telling that generation you can’t say that to me. My dad would have given me a good kick up the backside and told to respect your elders. Times have certainly changed and in recent times a generation has learnt a new lesson in a number of ways.

Instead of talking about the wars they will be talking about a virus, toilet paper shortage, a shortage of hand sanitiser, not being able to go see nanna or play in the park. Like the depression and recessions we had in the past, many have lost their jobs and businesses have been hit with bad times but there may be some positives that will come out of this when it all settles.

Being employed may mean more and families may rediscover the real value of the family and see each other more often. Sometimes not being able to do something makes you respect it more and I think my parents and grandparents learnt that in their times. We will see what lessons come from our current situation.

We are so lucky to be Australians at this current moment and to have governments that actually want to take care of all of us at a time of need. Mother Nature has a funny way of popping up and reminding us of balance and what’s really important.
