Remember when....

Sarah our Marketing Coordinator wrote the Remember When editorial for The Hills Gazette this week:-

I think the long weekend had me a little confused as last Monday my alarm was not on to wake me up for work! Luckily I woke up only forty five minutes past my alarm giving me a total of fifteen minutes to get out the door. I had enough time to do one of the following; have a shower or eat breakfast, I chose the shower and managed to rush and make it to work in time. Come nine thirty and my stomach was growling out in hunger, so I made the decision to quickly grab something to eat. That is when my indecisive nature came in as in Midland there are now so many options as to what to eat. I eventually went to Crooked Spire House and had an amazing detox yoghurt and granola with, of course, a coffee.

It made me think back to when I was younger when I would come to Midland to have morning tea with my grandparents. There were three options we would visit regularly, The Colony, Ritz and Aroma Café.Aroma Café was located in Midland Gate in the centre right near Sports Power. I remember when my family had their coffee and cake I would visit Sports Power and if I was lucky enough mum would buy me something. Midland Gate has changed dramatically since then, Aroma Café has now moved to the food court but I am sure there are many of you who remember its old location.

The Colony is still a local favourite, I have been going there for so many years I can confidently say that their focaccias are amazing, also their quiche and salad specials.

Ritz Café is located near the 7th Ave and Slater Gartrell Sports, this café has been a favourite for my grandad and his family, the Gartrells. Every birthday of his siblings and partners they have a celebratory morning tea there.

I am very lucky that I work around the corner and can pop in to see them when they are there. This tradition has been happening for as long as I can remember and The Ritz Café reminds me of the importance of family and keeping in touch.

Midland is evolving, and more and more exciting cafés and restaurants are popping up I now have so many options when I haven’t eaten breakfast or for lunch on my break. But I am also so appreciative of the local businesses and cafes who have been working in Midland for a long time, and will always be sure to visit them as well.

Which café was your old favourite?
